Top Tips For Building the Perfect Entertainment System

The perfect entertainment system is the key to movie, tv, sports watching or video gaming experience. I am honestly surprised at the number of people out there who think that a movie is just a movie no matter how you are viewing it.

How wrong that is. And how simple it is to set up a great entertainment system in your apartment.

There are a number of key elements that you will need to keep in mind when setting up the perfect entertainment system. Check this before you start to put together the pieces:

1) TV- Naturally this is the most important element of an amazing entertainment system and with the advancements in technology, really great flat panel televisions are becoming must easier on the bank account. When comparing TV’s it’s important to remember one thing: It’s not necessarily the size that matters, it’s the quality. Remember that you are setting up an entertainment center in your apartment, so a huge TV may not be the way to go because it might end up being like sitting in the front row of the movies. Ouch.

Whichever TV you decide upon make sure that it is HD, has audio outputs, and multiple component inputs(this is important for hooking everything up with ease.)

2) Sound System- Arguably the second most important element of a complete entertainment system is a surround sound system. It isn’t entirely necessary to blow your budget here, so do some shopping around, test out some systems, and get the word on the street. Then make your purchase accordingly. You’ll want to make sure that the main receiver has a few separate inputs too.

If you want to go ALL OUT in your sound system, look into wireless speakers that operate off of bluetooth technology. These are really sweet! You can even get headphones for these systems so that you can watch TV at whatever level you wish, while your roommates are sleeping because only you will be hearing it. Just be careful of your ear drums/

3) Game System or DVD player– You’ll also need a great gaming system to have a well rounded system. If you aren’t an avid game player, that’s okay…one or several of the many guests that you’ll be having over will be. Even so, the Play Station 3 and the Xbox 360 both serve as DVD players and full multimedia systems. You can store all of your music, video files, and pictures from your computer and showcase them all for everyones pleasure on your entertainment system. The PS3 even plays Blu-ray as well! It’s awesome.

But…if you really want to skimp on the game system, you will still need something to play DVD’s from…so be sure to pick up a DVD player. I would suggest avoiding HD-DVD systems and go Blu-Ray…and if you go Blu-Ray…you might as well spend the extra $100 for a PS3! Ha! It’s a vicious cycle.

4) Entertainment Center– So what are you storing all of this stuff in? I’ll tell you. A really awesome entertainment center or TV stand that looks sleek and can store everything while concealing all your wires. Housing your equipment is just as important as having it.

5) Something To Rest Your Butt On– Whether it’s a chair or a couch, you will need an awesome sit upon that is very comfortable while you enjoy your sweet system. This element often goes overlooked and you may be watching I Am Legend in Blu-Ray with surround sound on a high quality TV, but having to constantly shift because your butt is falling asleep. If you wanted that, you’d have gone to the movie theatre. Am I right or am I right? So be sure to get yourself comfy furniture to round everything out.

There are a number of other miscellaneous odds and ends that can help you out in completing and customizing your perfect entertainment system, but those 5 are the important ones.

Not that I am advocating anyone ever getting into debt by any means, but there are a ton of “big box” shops out there that will offer no interest financing on all of these items for certain periods of time. If you do this…make sure you have it paid off by the end of the promotion period, otherwise they will hit you with all of the back interest at a ridiculous interest rate. But if you can pay it off. Go for it!

Wireless In-Flight Entertainment Takes Off

There is a revolution going on right now in the world of in-flight entertainment (IFE). And it’s all to do with how content such as movies, TV shows and music gets delivered to the passenger.

Traditional embedded IFE hardware systems deliver content to overhead, personal TV (pTV) and seat back screens via miles of wires hidden from view. The complexity of these systems makes them prone to system failure – who hasn’t been on a plane, settled down to watch a film and then been confronted by a flickering blank screen for hours on end?

These systems are also very heavy which is a major issue for airlines looking for fuel efficiencies wherever possible. Add in the expense of the latest embedded systems at up to $5m per aircraft and it’s obvious to see why airlines are looking for alternatives.

Enter wireless IFE. Lower in weight, cheaper to buy and easier and quicker to install – it’s no wonder airlines are migrating to this new technology. The films, TV programmes and other content is delivered to the passenger in their seat wirelessly. There is an onboard server at the head end of the aircraft that allows passengers to connect via an airline provided system or via their own device such as laptop, tablet or smartphone. This wireless IFE system is essentially an intranet on a plane – also known in the industry as a ‘walled garden service’.

There are three wireless IFE models currently being tried and tested by airlines. The first is where the server streams content to the passenger’s own device such an iPad or iPhone. This is currently seen as a late release solution as the major Hollywood studios are obviously nervous about passengers leaving the plane with the latest Blockbusters on their personal devices. So the content package is likely to include classic films (those now on DVD) as well as popular TV shows and music.

This particular model is being followed by Southwest Airlines who will start charging passengers $5 per movie and $2 per TV show in 2012, using Row 44’s wireless IFE solution. Other airlines already offering passengers a similar pay per view wireless entertainment experience include American Airlines and Delta who are both using Gogo’s ‘Vision’ wireless IFE product.

The second option is to stream content from the server to an airline provided device. This is currently being trialled by Air Asia on their Kualar Lumpur to London route. Passengers can rent a Samsung Galaxy tablet and enjoy movies, music and e-magazines. This type of solution allows latest release movies to be made available to passengers as the airline has full control of the IFE device.

The third model is for content to be streamed wirelessly to an embedded seat-back IFE system – another early movie release solution. Virgin America is deploying this model using Lufthansa Systems’ ‘Boardconnect’ wireless IFE system. Movies will cost between and $5 and $7 and TV shows $2.

Wireless IFE is in its infancy though and not without teething problems. One issue concerns bandwidth restrictions meaning that not all passengers onboard a plane with wireless IFE available would currently be able to view content simultaneously.

In-seat power limits are also a concern. Most planes simply do not have enough capacity to provide adequate battery life if high numbers of passengers wish to power up their smartphones, laptops and tablets.

Nevertheless, the wireless streaming of in-flight entertainment is here to stay and many more airlines are sure to move to this exciting new technology in the coming months and years.

Holiday Gift Guide for the Movie Buff on Your List

So it’s that time of year. Time to buy gifts for your friends and family yet again as the world all over celebrates this corporate, commercial, money-hungry, festive and generosity-filled holiday. Some of you may already have it all taken care of by now. Others may be last-minute shoppers like myself and think that even now is just the start of the shopping season. No matter which you fall under, there’s bound to be at least a couple more on your list to check off. In this article, we’ll give you some ideas for gifts for those movie buffs you may have on your list.

1. Movies

Of course a movie buff loves movies. However, this gift selection isn’t as obvious as some of you may think. In fact, it could be one of the hardest choices for a movie fan there is. There are all types of problems that may arise here. You could pick the wrong format, the wrong medium, the wrong edition. Or you could plain and simple just pick the wrong movie. Or even more possible, buy them a movie they already own (afterall, they are movie buffs, chances are they have TONS of movies already making it even more likely to buy something they already have). Thus, that’s why I recommend staying away from this selection unless that movie fanatic in your life has actively been hinting at a certain movie lately. In which case, go for it. Movies are definitely good for us movie buffs. But again, be careful in what you buy. Or at least save the receipt and don’t be offended when that person needs to return your gift.

2. Netflix

Now for those of you wanting to get your movie buff some movies, but don’t want to go through the headache of making sure you don’t get the wrong thing, Netflix is your answer. Netflix allows that cinephile on your list access to all kinds of movies from the old to new, domestic to foreign, indie to blockbuster and so on. The great thing about this too, they get to choose which movies they want to watch, while you just pay for the subscription. Netflix Gifts come in a variety of plans and a variety of lengths. You can get your movie lover just the streaming package or you can choose a package which allows streaming, plus up to 1, 2, or 3 DVDs out at a time. These can all be bought in lengths from 1 month to 1 year. For instance, a streaming package for 6 months will run you about $48. Or you can go with 2 DVDs out at a time for 1 year for about $180. No matter what the choice, it’s sure to be a hit with the movie buff in your life. It doesn’t matter if they already have a subscription either as a Netflix Gift can simply be added to their already existing subscription and they’ll get free months of their service.

3. Fandango Card

Of course every movie buff spends ample amounts of time at the theater. So, along the lines of the Netflix thing, another option is a Fandango gift card (or a gift card from a local theater). This gives your movie buff a gift that will keep on giving over the year as they revisit the theater. Each time getting to enjoy the big screen magic on your dime. The movie buff on your list will surely love a gift like this over the months as they get to catch all the latest releases.

4. Movie Memorabilia

Your typical movie buff is obsessed with movies in probably a way you will never fully understand. As such, this means everything about movies they enjoy. Thus, another good gift for that movie lover on your list is movie memorabilia. This ranges from movie posters, to shirts, to collector’s items, to autographed items, to boxed sets, to film cells and artwork. You can even buy scripts/screenplays/props from their favorite movies online. With many online outlets that sell this type of stuff, the possibilities are endless once you know some of your movie buff’s favorite movies or actors, etc.

5. Movie-Related Books and Magazines

As I stated before, chances are the movie buff in your life loves everything movie-related. This goes for books and magazines as well. Biographies on their favorite actors or movie-related books are good unconventional ideas for the movie buff in your life. There are plenty books out there designed for these types of people. From 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die to 1000 Films to Change Your Life to The 100 Best Movies to Rent You’ve Never Heard Of to even more specific books like 101 Horror Movies You Must See Before You Die. All would be a welcome treat for the movie buff in your life. Likewise, the movie buff in your life most assuredly likes to keep up with all things movies and get insights into the industry they so love. As such, magazine subscriptions that cater to these types are also good choices. These include print and online types. Though I will say you’ll want to go beyond the more mainstream types of Entertainment Weekly, Rolling Stones, etc. Instead, look into things like ‘Boxoffice Magazine’, ‘Hollywood Reporter’, ‘Premiere’, ‘Empire’ (UK), ‘MovieMaker’ or ‘Filmmaker Magazine’. Likewise, you could also get them a subscription to online industry rags like Variety.com or ProductionWeekly.com.

6. Universal Remote

As you probably know, the movie buff in your life definitely has a love for electronics. This is especially true when it comes to their home entertainment setup. All of that gear can get out of hand though when remote controls begin piling up. Introduce the Logitech Harmony. The cream of the crop when it comes to universal remotes. This line of remotes from Logitech range from about $100 to over $300. Any movie buff would be happy to get their hands on such a remote control to accent their setup.

7. Roku Box

This is a great accompanying gift for a Netflix subscription. The streaming player allows the movie lover to use any of those streaming services to stream movies directly to their TV instead of having to watch on their computer or laptop. This is great for any movie buff who would much rather watch on their big screen TV rather than their little computer monitor. The Roku box allows for Netflix instant streaming on your TV. It also allows access to such services as Hulu Plus, Amazon On Demand and more.

8. Blu-Ray Player

Chances are your movie buff already has one of these in their collection. However, for those that don’t a Blu-ray player is a great gift for the movie buff in your life. Providing for a high-definition movie viewing experience, the movie buff in your life will love the immersion of watching their favorite movies in pristine hi-def.

9. Popcorn Maker

Everybody knows: popcorn goes with movies like jelly goes with peanut butter. And for some reason, kettle popcorn just tastes better. So why not bring that theater goodness into the home of your favorite movie buff giving them the gift of snacks anytime they sit down to watch a movie at home. You can find many kettle popcorn makers for under $100. Any movie buff would find it cool to have their very own popcorn maker sitting in the corner of their room for access whenever they want to spend the evening watching movies (and trust me, they do this very often).

10. “Gaming” Chair

These provide the ultimate comfort when sitting in front of the TV for a movie. With built-in speaker systems and ultimate comfort, there are tons of stylish gaming chairs out there. Any movie buff would love one of these cool recliner/pedestal chairs to kick back and enjoy their movie-viewing experience. Not only does it just flat-out look cool and are they comfortable, but they also provide more immersion with the speakers in the headrest and subwoofers built into the chair that make you rumble along with explosions on the screen.

11. Surround Sound System

Speaking of sound, if your movie buff doesn’t already have one, a surround sound system is always a welcome addition to their home entertainment experience. Providing an immersion of sound to accompany their viewing experience, a surround sound system is an absolute must for any movie buff that is looking to make the most of the home entertainment experience. Of course, this can be a costly gift, but the movie buff in your life will definitely be grateful.

12. HDTV

Since we’re mentioning essential components, a TV definitely falls in that range. Obviously your movie buff already has one, but they’re never opposed to a new TV (or even just a secondary TV). Whether it be a smaller LCD TV to put in their room or an upgrade to a top-of-the-line brand new 3D TV, TVs are always welcome. Your movie buff would definitely love you for this. With the pushing of 3D TVs, these are a definite hot item too which most movie buffs in your life would more than happily take. Again though, this is one of the more costly gifts, so expect to pay thousands for something like that.

13. Movie Storage

You probably know this already, but the movie buff in your life probably has a very extensive collection of movies. A collection they love to proudly show off as well. Of course such a collection can often become something of a beast that needs taming. Enter the realm of media storage. This actually comes in two forms as well: physical and digital. First we’ll touch on the traditional physical form. This simply means cabinets and shelves. If the movie buff in your life doesn’t already have the shelving for their collection, or is simply running out of shelf space, then a new shelf, rack or tower would be a practical and welcome gift for your movie buff in helping to tame that ever-growing collection and bring some order to it. Of course you have the digital front as well. This is the same concept as storing all of your music on your computer. Many companies make devices specifically for media storage like this. There are even companies like Kaleidoscope and PrimeArray which create systems that serve as storage and servers. This means all movies are saved on a digital storage device. The cherry on top though is that these devices then provide a means to share all that data across a network and have access to your entire movie collection with one click of a button on your remote. Having instant access to any movie in your collection without having to get up and change out discs, etc. These however can get extremely expensive. Some even more costly than the TVs themselves. But the techphile/cinephile in your life would love it.

14. AFI Membership

Every film buff is familiar with the prestigious American Film Institute. What better way to reward their passion for films than allowing your movie buff to become part of that institute by buying them a membership to the AFI. This can range from $60-2,500. Offering cool perks like movie tickets, exclusive release schedules and magazine subscriptions, an AFI membership also grants members admission to AFI events. On top of that, your movie buff would even be able to vote alongside industry professionals for various movie awards and accolades dealt out by AFI each year. To top it off, they would even get an AFI membership card to proudly show off to friends as a sign to their dedication to films.

15. Film Festival Pass

I’m sure you’ve heard of them. Sundance. Cannes. Attending these more prestigious film festivals are like a life-long dream for the movie buff in your life probably. They’d probably give an arm or a leg to get to experience going to the prestigious Sundance festival or Cannes or the Venice Film Festival. However, these events book well in advance and can be costly. Thus, they don’t make good last-minute gift ideas. Though, I’m sure your movie buff would happily take a “rain check” on a gift if it means the promise of getting a pass to one of these festivals later on. Likewise, many bigger cities offer their own film festivals throughout the year. If you live near one of these, your movie buff would definitely love the chance to get to attend one of those as well.

Serious Impressions of Stupid Movies

Movies have become one of the most influential factors in modern society. From starting new trends to educating the ordinary people, movies undoubtedly make an impression on the general public. Since the discovery of the very first motion picture in 1890s, movies have become a visual documentation on events of human evolution. Talking about the movies that are produced for entertainment purposes, here is a quote, from the Pulitzer Prize winner film critic Roger Ebert:

“We live in a box of space and time. Movies are windows in its walls. They allow us to enter other minds not simply in sense of identifying with the characters, but by seeing the world as another person sees it.”

-Roger Ebert

Roger once said that art is the closest that we could come to understanding how a stranger feels and movies as an amalgum of audio and visual form of arts, makes a very complex and sophisticated form of art. There is an undeniable effect that movies have in our thought process. When we exit a theatre after watching a movie, we leave with the definite kind of thoughts depending upon the movie we watched. With our responsibilities of daily life we skip through myriads of social and emotional aspects that keep us humane. We live in a world with so much colors and variations of human aspects but we fail to recognize and enjoy, while busy in our commitments. And that is where movies are a sweet reminder of what we are and what we have. Let us take “Forrest Gump” for instance that portrays the innocence of a guy, with the spirit to make something out of himself despite all the shortcomings. Or the more recent one “Happythankyoumoreplease”, which shows characters, no different from the ones in our neighborhood. The characters in the reel world are no different from those in our real world and the challenges they face are just a version of the ones we face. And movies help us understand life through different perspectives.

Let us take modern historical period movies and old classic ones, they are a depiction of how things were in the days gone by. As ordinary people they tend to be a reminder of our heritage, a source of reminiscence and nostalgia. There are also movies like “Blade Runner” which give us a peek into how things could be in the future, and there are ones that make us laugh and have a good time. Educating us, tickling our funny bones to cautioning us about the future events that could fall upon us, movies have an undeniable influence on our thoughts and actions.

There is little bad with every little good

Movie as a technology has grown from a simple fast moving collection of pictures to a complicated industry. With the technology’s ever growing popularity, movies have now become an integral part of our daily life. Be it in a friendly chat among friends or the daily news broadcast, movies are one of the subjects of discussion. Primarily a form of entertainment, movies as a whole is also listed as an informal source of education. Many people tend to learn from movies more than any other formal source, although that might seem like an overstatement. In many under developed countries movies and television series are used as the means for educating the population for social reform and bring an overall change. There is no denying on a vast reach of movies, this however could have a very bad effect, as not every movie carries the same humane values.

Movies that fall under the genres like historical drama, historical war movies and biopics are often criticized for taking liberty with the historical facts. They are accused of bending the story to dramatize events and make interesting movies. One of such movies is “Pearl Harbor”, which was released under much criticism. With film makers taking such liberty with the historical subject matters, it is both disrespectful and unforgivable. Due to such movies gullible audiences go on to believe a fiction to be the fact, which is not a good thing. On the other hand there are movies that fall under action and horror genres which are criticized for violent contents. Directors like Quentin Tarantino in Hollywood and Anurag Kashyap in Bollywood have their respective reason and logical explanations regarding such contents. Despite their reasonable explanations there is no denying that the exposure to violence may cause personality disorder in kids and other receptive demographic. There exists proper processes of identification and allotting category a movie goes through before its release to diminish such adverse effects. However their presence is only as good as the implementation.

Movies are Stupid

“The point is not to avoid all Stupid Movies, but to avoid being a Stupid Moviegoer, It’s a difficult task separating the good Stupid Movies from the bad ones… ” -Roger Ebert

Often movies are termed as stupid waste of time. The opinion is not wrong on its own but we have to keep in mind that there are literally millions of movies representing a genre and there are numerous genres. Though not all of them deserve our attention but not all of them deserve our indifference either. Thus, the responsibility falls upon us to choose the movie that would be worth the time. In fact the choice of movies differs with each individual. And each genre of movies is targeted towards a specific kind of audience.

Every work of Art is subject to one’s own perception and interpretation, movies are no different. Just like any art, each movie is bound to have its point of view and an agenda. Movies are the most expressive among all forms of arts as such it is capable of covering a huge demographic with no bias of color, age or region. This benefits the film makers with the power to impress the huge susceptible population with their ideas. However, it falls upon the viewer to choose the right movie.

Connecting with a movie

A movie without a definite direction becomes a disaster, as such most of the times it is the director who determines a certain tone of the movie subject. With proper co-ordination with his fellow colleagues director goes on to create a masterpiece that resonates with our life and mindset. This is when we would be sucked into a different world altogether. And that is the real satisfaction of watching a movie. Otherwise it would become a stupid waste of time.

However besides the nuances in the production of a movies itself, there are many factors that affects its connection with the audience. One such case is “The Room” which released in 2003 as an independent movie. The movie was written, produced and directed by Tommy Wiseau, who also acted in the movie. The movie was completely slaughtered by the critics while it did a good business. There are also the DC movies like “Suicide Squad” and “Justice League” which despite the critical bashing go on to collect big bucks. The reason there being the subject matter though poorly executed is dear to the fans of DC comics.

Movies have now become an integral part of human lifestyle. It could very well be a form of social activity, where we would all come together for a good time. There is also one of the most important influences as one of the biggest industry, it employs a large number of manpower. Though a topic of socio-economic influence is worth another article, there is no denying that movies have become one of the social activities. So we could try and divide a movie into good and bad but as a form of art, a movie is just that, an art.

Acting Scams Part 4

So, you’ve finally done it. You’ve now secured yourself an agent! You are so excited. You’ve been wanting to get into acting for the longest time. Why, it’s been your lifelong dream and passion. You can’t wait to get started!

You go in for a meeting with your new agent. He or she tells you how excited they are to be representing you. They tell you about all the other actors they are representing. They tell you that all the other actors they are representing are doing exceptionally well. They are working all over town, doing commercials and movie features. They tell you that you will probably have similar success.

Next, they further inflate your head with dollar signs. You’re going to make $10,000 for doing some commercials. You’re probably going to make hundreds of thousands for doing some of the movie roles they are going to help you to get. And you could make hundreds of dollars per hour on modeling jobs and stock photo shoots.

But, wait…there’s a catch! In order to take advantage of the all the wonderful acting opportunities your new agent has for you, you’re going to have to take classes. But not just any acting classes. You’re going to have to take classes with them. And ONLY with them.

Will they allow you to improve your acting skills with your own private acting coach. NO! Will they accept you taking classes in a reputable acting school in town. NO! Only their acting classes will do. That is, of course, because their acting classes are the best in town. And they need to monitor your acting progress personally. And, they claim, their classes are cheap, only $1000 or $2000 total. They include the photos needed for your portfolio and all your other ‘marketing materials’ into the price.

This, ladies and gentlemen, is a scam! But, with all the excitement you’re feeling at the moment, you don’t care. You’re just ready to begin your career. The few thousand they’re asking for is only a small cost to your budding career.

Dead Giveaways:

Wait. Don’t be confused. Every actor should take acting classes. It is essential to polish your acting talents. Even if you’ve taken classes in the past you should continue refining your skills and improving and expanding your acting abilities.

However, if you are asked to take classes as a prerequisite for representation, run for the border because 99% of the time this is a scam. This is how you can tell:

o The agent forces you to take classes with their agency and will not allow you to take classes anywhere else. No agent should have a problem with you taking classes with other schools. That is, of course, unless they are scamming you!

o The agent requires that you take classes with their agency as a prerequisite for representation. The agent has skillfully placed their acting classes between you and your possible career. By placing their classes between you and your possible acting career, they know that most actors will say ‘yes’ and spend the money in order to get started acting.

o Lastly, these types of agencies are scammers because their agency gets the majority of its money from their classes. That means they don’t care who they represent. They will represent anyone! It also means they don’t care if you work as an actor. They are not going to fight hard to get you an acting role or audition because they already got paid. They got paid when you signed on as an actor in their agency and paid for their required classes. Sure, they might get you an audition at some point. But, since they already got paid, they will probably not be very urgent in finding you auditions and acting opportunities.
